Release date of the Apple Watch Ultra

The Apple Watch 8 Ultra is already available for pre-orders, where shipping is expected to happen on September 23, 2022. That is not too far off, and it would be interesting to see just now many units will ship considering the rather hefty price.

Price & deals: Where to buy the Apple Watch Ultra

This new smartwatch will be priced from $799 a pop, although with selected customizations, you will definitely be able to go beyond that figure. Currently, the Apple Store is the primary place for you to place an order. Thankfully, those who are on a tighter budget will still be able to bring home the Apple Watch Ultra with selected offers from other retailers.

Mobile service providers such as Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T and retailers like Best Buy, among others, do have their own offers where the Apple Watch Ultra is concerned. Some of them offer attractive trade-in values as well BOGO deals.

The straps alone cost a whopping $99 which is insane under current economic headwinds. In fact, everything about the Apple Watch Ultra is expensive, including its repair costs.

Apple Watch Ultra colors

The titanium-clad Apple Watch Ultra has just one color, but you will be able to customize it through the availability of different bands from the Apple Store. There are 9 different bands to choose from at the moment, so knock yourself out in picking one that suits your personality and needs best.

Apple Watch Ultra technical specifications

First things first: the Apple Watch Ultra is huge, as it arrives in a 49-millimeter format, with a display that is close to 2-inches in size. Some people might be disappointed with the SoC that is used in this flagship Apple Watch, powered by the same Apple S8 dual-core processor that is already a few years old, accompanied by the Apple W3 and Apple U1 chips (Ultra-wideband).

The only exception here is the battery capacity. The smartwatch now claims a battery life of up to 36 hours and it can even push the runtime to a whopping 60 hours in energy-saving mode. However, do take note that this feature will only be enabled after it receives a software update in the fall of 2022. Apple has also added a dual-band GPS receiver for the L1 and L5 bands for better GPS tracking.

Apple encased the Watch Ultra in an expensive, robust titanium case alongside a flat sapphire glass that has a slight edge to provide additional protection. The new "action button" on the left of the case lets you freely assign a function of your choice to it. The digital crown has also undergone a redesign, where it is larger now and should be able to be operable with gloves.

It is also waterproof according to WR100 standards, making it suitable for sports like kitesurfing and wakeboarding. Think it could be tougher? The Watch 8 Ultra meets the EN13319 specification for dive computers, allowing you to go as deep as 40 meters. A trio of microphones should improve its call quality under windy conditions, while the speaker is equipped with an 80 dB alarm siren that should be loud enough to be heard from 180 meters away in an emergency.

Apple Watch Ultra features

The Watch 8 Ultra is also able to measure vertical movement while running. This allows you to receive feedback on your running efficiency. Interestingly enough, there is also the ability for the Apple Watch Ultra to bring you back to the start of your running trail, just in case you get lost with the Backtrack function. In addition, there is also a new compass app with waypoints if you are one who loves to go off the beaten trail.
