Browse the web without an internet connection with Cosmos Browser app! [updated]

Remember we told you about the awesome new Cosmos Browser app last week, that lets you browse the internet without a connection to Wi-Fi or your data plan? Well, the pioneering new app, which is still currently in its beta stage, is now available for free in the Play Store. As you may recall, it relies on SMS messages to send online content without the need for a web connection, so as long as you can send an SMS, you should be able to go online...offline. Update: The team behind Cosmos Browser has had to suspend server activity and temporarily pull the app from the Play Store. More details at the bottom of the article.

The way Cosmos Browser works is simple in principle: after downloading the app, enter the URL of any site you wish to visit and the application will automatically send a request to the server. Once Cosmos has removed any images and compressed the pages, it sends the content back to the user in the form of an SMS. The application then decompresses the incoming SMS and displays it as something similar to a normal webpage.

Or this is the theory. As with any project in its beta stage, the app still has problems, and we are still unable to get it to work consistently. The developers have stated that this is the reason for its early release, with the team hoping that users will "break [the app] as much as possible" and report bugs when they do.

The Cosmos Browser app is certainly an intriguing concept and we'll be interested to see what it looks like upon its full release. If you want to try it out in its current state, and support the development, you can download from the Play Store via the link below.

Update: Cosmos Broswer's team sent out a press release stating that they have had to mute the server and temporarily remove the Cosmos Browser app from the Play Store until they gather enough funds to keep their awesome project going. Keep an eye on the Cosmos Browser Facebook page for updates, and we'll be sure to let you know when everything is operational again. We'll keep the install link below for when everything returns to normal though, so stay tuned.

I know we here at AndroidPIT seem all-powerful, but I'm afraid this is out of our hands. :/

Try emailing the developer instead ;)

Does anyone know if this charges you for using SMS? Cuz I use my mobile phone with Credits, not contract. So I buy about 10 Riyals of Credits every now and then, just wondering if it would use my credits for every SMS, which is 0.25 Riyals for every SMS.

It will cost to send the initial SMS yes but it doesn't charge you to receive the ones they send back, even if they have to send a few of them for large websites.
